| "We Get Confessions" is the unofficial training manual for police officers studying interrogation techniques. The author of this Web site is familiar with this book via a Mr. Charles Grant, who was picked up by police officers working for Lieutenant Al Joseph (who is retired from the Rochester, New York Police Department). Mr. Grant was coerced by the officers under Lt. Al Joseph's supervision to confess to a rape he did not commit. At his trial, Mr. Grant's attorney David Maurante, in case dockett # 927-96 (1996) in Rochester NY Supreme Court, alleged that the confession was coerced, and entered a copy of Mr. Joseph's book into evidence. The book teaches officers how to skillfully manipulate their way around the Miranda Laws, and "Get Confessions" from suspects in their custody. It turns out that Mr. Grant was nowhere near the scene of the crime, and could prove it by parking receipts obtained near the time of the crime which occurred miles across town. The question then arose as to why he gave the officers a detailed written confession. The answer was the tactics in Mr. Joseph's book. The case against Mr. Grant was dismissed with prejudice. Mr. Joseph appeared in an article in the July - August 1998 issue of Justicia - newsletter of the Judicial Process Commission, 121 N. Fitzhugh Street, Rochester, NY 14614 Phone: (585) 325-7727 written by attorney Felix Lapine. This book is an invaluable aid for defense attorneys, because it exposes unconstitutional police tactics. |
